Zach Tow Is Back: Kentucky Walk-On Returns for Another Chapter Under Mark Pope

In a summer brimming with fresh talent and off-season headlines, one return has flown under the radar, yet it speaks volumes about heart, perseverance, and pride. Zach Tow, a native of Madisonville, Kentucky, and a walk-on from last season’s roster, has quietly rejoined the Wildcats for what will be his second season under head coach Mark Pope. The subtle confirmation came via UK Athletics’ official summer practice photos, where Tow was spotted wearing his familiar No. 20 jersey.

For a team welcoming in high-profile transfers, top-ranked freshmen, and international prospects, Tow’s return may not have made national headlines, but his presence resonates deeply within the Big Blue Nation. Walk-ons represent the spirit of the game  players who sacrifice for the greater good, who train without guaranteed minutes, and who give their all in practices and in locker rooms to help push the team forward. And in Zach Tow, Kentucky has just that kind of player.

The 6-foot-5 senior earned his walk-on spot last season after standout performances at open tryouts. A graduate of Madisonville North Hopkins High School, Tow was a well-rounded and gritty player in high school. During his senior season (2021-22), he averaged an impressive 12.5 points and 11.5 rebounds per game. His junior year stats were just as consistent, averaging 11 points and 11 rebounds, helping lead his team to a berth in the KHSAA Sweet 16 in 2019.

Though he didn’t log many minutes last season, Tow still made his mark. He appeared in two key games: the Senior Night blowout win against LSU, and the Wildcats’ first-round NCAA Tournament win over Troy. That tournament victory was a milestone for Mark Pope, who notched his first March Madness win as head coach. For Tow, those appearances symbolized the reward for months of hard work, dedication, and readiness.

Tow’s return comes amid a reshuffling of Kentucky’s roster under new NCAA guidelines. Due to the newly approved House settlement, walk-on players are no longer restricted by the 13-scholarship player cap. This rule change allows programs to carry up to 15 total players regardless of scholarship status. As a returning walk-on from last season, Tow is grandfathered in under the previous rule and does not count against the 15-player roster cap. His return, alongside fellow walk-on Walker Horn, gives Kentucky added flexibility, experience, and camaraderie.

It’s not just Tow’s basketball pedigree or work ethic that makes his return special. It’s also his Kentucky roots. Hailing from the Bluegrass State, Tow embodies the dreams of countless local kids who grow up idolizing Wildcat legends and imagining their own names announced at Rupp Arena. While star players might shine brightest under the lights, it’s players like Tow who often serve as the glue, uniting a team and keeping morale high throughout the season.

With the 2025-26 season promising to be a defining one for Coach Pope and Kentucky basketball, every player will be crucial to the team’s chemistry, culture, and success. And in a locker room filled with big names and big talent, Zach Tow brings humility, hunger, and heart — a true Wildcat in every sense.

As Big Blue Nation gears up for another season of hardwood battles and championship dreams, keep an eye on No. 20. Zach Tow may not be the headliner, but his story is one worth celebrating, and his impact may be more significant than the stat sheet ever shows.

Welcome back, Zach. The blue and white suits you well.
