Wilt Chamberlain’s 55-rebound game that evening
On November 24, 1960, the statisticians were rather busy tracking Wilt Chamberlain’s whereabouts on the court and the bouncing ball.
The superstar of the Philadelphia Warriors, who lost 132-129 to the visiting Boston Celtics, played all 48 minutes and pulled down an NBA-record 55 rebounds. By alone, Chamberlain almost outrebounded the Celtics, who ended up with 59 boards. Bill Russell finished with 18 points and 19 rebounds.
The legendary Wilt set the tone in the low post as the Warriors brought down 90 rebounds.
Philly made 52 of 128 shots on the night, while Boston made 52 of 109. After shooting 15 for 42 from the field, Wilt finished with 34 points.
Years later, during an interview, Chamberlain discussed his 55-rebound game.
The Hall of Famer remarked, “The thing that I remember most about the 55 rebounds was that when the game was over, I was probably more tired than I’ve ever been in my entire life.”
