At the MotoGP Jerez test, Marc Marquez gave an explanation for his desire to try a new brake on the Ducati GP23.
On Monday, he tried using the thumb brake on the left handlebar.
It’s hard to adjust in only one day when I’ve been used to braking in one way for 12 years,” Marquez told Sky Italia.
“I’ve made several attempts. At Le Mans, we’re not using the thumb brake.
I would rather use my [foot brake] to advance since I am sensitive enough.
although Martin and Pecco both use the thumb brake, I’ve wanted to test it nonetheless.”
The main component that Gresini’s top rider tried was explained by Ducati team manager Davide Tardozzi as follows: “Marc has never used the rear thumb brake.”
While we think it’s crucial to control the bike when riding a Ducati, particularly during the acceleration phase
Marc now has access to enough information from us to comprehend why and how to operate the motorcycle more skillfully when accelerating.
After the test in Jerez on Monday, Marquez said he could now give more accurate input to the Ducati engineers.
Marquez has already competed in four rounds and appeared twice in preseason tests after riding a Desmosedici for the first time at the postseason Valencia test in November.
The Gresini rider’s first in-season test day of the year was on Monday in Jerez.
The day following his thrilling fight, which he lost against Francesco Bagnaia, can turn out to be crucial for Marquez’s season.
A clear reason for his move to Ducati is the opportunity to test products that are regularly used by GP24 riders Bagnaia and Jorge Martin, who now hold the top two positions in the MotoGP standings.
Although Marquez hasn’t won since leaving Honda, he is encouraged by his consistent front-running in the first four rounds of 2024.
In two weeks, he will race at Le Mans using his regular foot brake instead of the thumb brake he tested in Jerez. He will also bring the knowledge he gained from a full day of testing regarding his new vehicle to the race.
