Brad Friedel believes Manchester City goalkeeper Ederson is almost as good as Liverpool’s Alisson Becker.
Alisson vs Ederson is a debate that’s raged in the Premier League since the Liverpool man joined his compatriot in the country back in 2018. It’s also one that extends to the Brazilian national team.
The Man City stopper is comfortably ahead in terms of trophy count, but Alisson is widely regarded as the better ‘keeper. Having played 450 Premier League games, Friedel is well-placed to comment. And speaking to TalkSPORT, the American backed Alisson… just.
Alisson for me is the best right now,” Freidel asserts. “Ederson is excellent also, he’s very, very close to him, but I like Alisson.
“What I like most about Alisson is when he does make mistakes, like all goalkeepers do, it just doesn’t faze him, he can walk straight back out on the pitch again and be very, very good.
Ederson is probably the best at that, playing out of the back when you’re being pressed. He also has that 70, 80-yard pass with great accuracy, Alisson is obviously very good at that as well.”
Alisson the best of the bunch
In Premier League terms, fans of a few different clubs often claim that their goalie is indeed the best in the division.
But the only ones who can really say that with any kind of real conviction are Liverpool supporters.
Right now, there isn’t a goalkeeper in the world who can hold a candle to Alisson, let alone one in the Premier League.
As Friedel mentions, Ederson is perhaps the next-best thing. Although the 29-year-old has seemed to decline a little over recent seasons. His passing is still just as pinpoint as ever, but his general goalkeeping isn’t as impressive as it once was.
Beyond the Man City ‘keeper, some may put forward the likes of Aston Villa’s Emi Martinez or Aaron Ramsdale at Arsenal. But we just can’t see it.
Martinez is nothing but a wind-up merchant, while Ramsdale has a long, long way to go before he’s deserving of being in the conversation.
Others like Jordan Pickford, Nick Pope and Manchester United new-boy Andre Onana may want a seat at the table, too. But in our opinion, they’re all a million miles away from Alisson’s level. With apologies to Brad, we think Ederson is too.
