Although it’s most likely going to happen, Maluach has had to face concerns before.
Cooper Flagg is widely anticipated to perform well as Duke’s draughted players start to break into the NBA. In Summer League play, Kon Knueppel left a lasting impression. Cleveland signed Tyrese Proctor to a multi-year contract, and Charlotte has hopes for Sion James. To sum up, everyone has so far met or beyond expectations—with the exception of Khaman Maluach. It’s absurd that some appear to believe he’s already a failure. This is Maluach’s reality. He was draughted based more on promise than accomplishment, much like everyone else today. He is 7-2 and has good defensive instincts, so those are some characteristics that cannot be disputed. He can guard smaller players and has good footwork.
However, he is still developing into his 7-2 frame at the age of 18, and up until a year ago, he was a South Sudanese refugee who played in underfunded Ugandan gyms.
Does he represent a project? Yes, in part. We figured that folks knew this. He isn’t yet completely prepared for the NBA. However, this is what his detractors are failing to notice. Throughout his year at Duke, Maluach advanced extremely quickly. Although he was somewhat shy at the start of the season, his instincts quickly took over. He was able to switch out on perimeter players defensively, made life difficult in the lane, and shown some decent hand skills. He won’t be a dominant player on Day One, despite what you may have thought. He has the opportunity to become a very good centre, though.
We assume that after conducting their due research and interviewing him, they discovered that he has outstanding character, works extremely hard, and picks things up quickly. Jon Scheyer undoubtedly described Malauch’s peculiar personality.
Considering everything, would you hold off until he further develops? Probably. The Suns are aware that Maluach will require some time to mature, but they also know that he is a hard worker who has made impressive progress thus far. When he succeeds, those who doubt him will feel dumb.
