Chelsea injury news: Christopher Nkunku is an injury concern for the Blues ahead of the Liverpool clash next week.
Chelsea have completed their pre-season preparations and are now just eight days away from their opening fixture of the Premier League season against Liverpool.
The Blues will be hoping for a full squad availability for the clash at Stamford Bridge, but they will be sweating over the fitness of new boy Christopher Nkunku. With three wins and two draws in their friendly matches as part of a pre-season tour of the USA, head coach Mauricio Pochettino has given plenty of hope to fans surrounding turning around last season’s dismal finish.
One of the fresh faces that has been involved is Nkunku, who joined the Blues from RB Leipzig this summer after agreeing a move months ago. The forward set the Bundesliga alight and was the joint-top scorer in the division, despite missing a large portion of games.
That was down to injury concerns, something he has had occasional issues with over his career so far and something the west London outfit will want to avoid. There were signs that the Frenchman was being eased into fitness this summer, but that took a turn against Borussia Dortmund.
With Nkunku now facing the potential of being sidelined before the new season, here’s a look at the latest surrounding the injury concerns of the new Chelsea man.
According to a report from the Guardian, Chelsea are optimistic that Nkunku hasn’t suffered a serious injury, but there are doubts he will be ready for the opening game of the season. The Blues are awaiting more information on the extent of the issue, but it could see the forward miss the Liverpool clash.
Mauricio Pochettino claim
Chelsea boss Mauricio Pochettino has claimed that Nkunku will be assessed following his substitution against Borussia Dortmund as part of an injury concern. He told reporters: “The doctors are checking him. He had the chance to score but he feels something in his knee.
Hopefully it is not a big issue and that he can be quick with the team. We need a few days to assess him and until we get back to London it is difficult to know. Always we take some risks because the pitch is not perfect as they are using it for different sports and that is sometimes the risk of the tour.
“I think it was a bit unlucky in the situation but we cannot complain about the pitch and to blame the pitch for why he suffered the injury. For me, it was bad luck.
Injury concern
Christopher Nkunku is an injury concern for Chelsea after the forward had to be substituted 22 minutes into a friendly clash with Borussia Dortmund in pre-season. The Frenchman suffered a knock to the knee that force the change in the first-half, with the new season just around the corner.
