Manchester City director Txiki Begiristain pulled off a transfer masterclass by selling Cole Palmer to Chelsea.
The recent summer transfer window saw numerous players make moves in and out of the Etihad Stadium.
Even though the Citizens brought in players such as Mateo Kovacic, Josko Gvardiol, Jeremy Doku and Matheus Nunes, we feel that their best piece of business in the window involved Palmer making his way to Chelsea.
After rejecting a £35m bid for the winger from the west London club, a deal worth an overall fee of £42.5m was eventually struck between the two sides, leaving Palmer to join Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
After making 64 youth appearances for City, the 21-year-old then went on to make 41 appearances for Pep Guardiola’s outfit across all competitions.
Across those 41 appearances, the Englishman scored six goals and delivered two assists.
Having only been able to provide one assist and score one goal in 25 appearances last season, the fact that City managed to get such a significant fee from Chelsea for a player that couldn’t earn himself a regular place in Guardiola’s starting XI shows just how much of a great bit of business it was from them.
Even though the City manager was a big fan of the youngster and even called him an “extraordinary” player, to pick up such a hefty transfer fee for a player with a relatively low amount of top-flight experience and an inability to deliver goals and assists on a regular basis must have been an opportunity they couldn’t turn down.
