Ian Maatsen’s loan to Borussia Dortmund is almost complete, and we’re now getting all of the juicy details about how the deal will work.
The left back will complete a medical tomorrow in order to finalise the loan move, which interestingly does not have a purchase option – at least according to Matt Law.
Initially we assumed that this would be a permanent transfer. Chelsea need the cash flow, and Maatsen is heading towards the end of his contract. But then we heard it was going to be a loan.
That makes sense if there’s a compulsory purchase clause in there so that Chelsea can rely on the future income. But Law says there isn’t – this is a plain 6 month loan to try and raise the talented academy star’s value. The Blues get £2m of loan fee and presumably Maatsen’s wages paid, but no guarantee Dortmund will buy him.
There is some useful protection included though – as part of the whole deal, the 21 year old has agreed a one year extension to his Chelsea contract, meaning we can loan him out without watching his value drop as he heads towards free angency.
