Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has admitted that he expected to succeed in the Premier League.
WHAT OCCURED? The Norwegian forward, who has 52 goals in 52 games during his first season in England, admitted that he always thought he would score frequently for Man City. His 36 Premier League goals are a record for the competition.
THEY SAID: “There was no room for uncertainty. I knew I was going to perform and I knew I was going to play in a good team, so there were no doubts,” he told Sky Sports after being named FWA Footballer of the Year.
To be really honest, I didn’t expect to score 52 goals, but I still expected to score, he said. “Last year City scored 100 goals so for me to come into this squad and score, of course I expected this, but not this much no. I understand why people say it’s the best league because it really is. I adore it, I love to play here. I enjoy all types of duels, including running duels. I’m liking it.”
THE BIGGER PICTURE: The Cityzens paid €60m (£53m/$64m) to get Haaland from Borussia Dortmund last summer. Pep Guardiola’s team will play in the FA Cup and Champions League finals after winning the Premier League, and he has shown he is the driving force behind a City team vying for what would be just the second treble in English football history.
THEN WHAT? Man City continue their Premier League season with a trip to Brentford on Sunday. After that, they will meet Manchester United in the FA Cup Final on June 3
