The NCAA responds to Mike Krzyzewski’s historic statement on Wednesday

The Duke Blue Devils have become one of college basketball’s elite programs, largely thanks to the iconic tenure of head coach Mike Krzyzewski, who guided the team from 1980 until his retirement in 2022

While at Duke, Krzyzewski elevated the program to national prominence, becoming the winningest coach in Division I history. He led the Blue Devils to five national championships, 13 Final Four appearances, and amassed 1,129 victories—more than any coach at a single school.

Upon his retirement, Krzyzewski handed the program over to Jon Scheyer, his former player and assistant. Under Scheyer’s leadership, Duke has remained a powerhouse, recently advancing to the Final Four and securing both the ACC regular season and tournament titles.

In a historic moment on Wednesday, Krzyzewski was announced as an inductee into the U.S. Olympic and Paralympic Hall of Fame, recognizing his immense impact on Team USA basketball.

The NCAA celebrated the news with a tribute, stating, “The legacy of Coach K grows. The basketball legend has earned a spot in the Team USA Hall of Fame.”

He will be officially inducted on July 12 during a ceremony in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Following the announcement, Duke Athletics honored Krzyzewski with a heartfelt message.

“Krzyzewski is one of the most accomplished and respected figures in basketball history,” the statement read. “As head coach of the U.S. men’s Olympic basketball team, he led the squad to three straight Olympic gold medals (2008, 2012, 2016) and six total golds as the national team’s head coach.”

They added, “He was instrumental in reviving Team USA’s global dominance after a disappointing bronze in 2004, guiding the ‘Redeem Team’ to gold in Beijing 2008 and reestablishing the U.S. as a basketball superpower.”
