The great Bjorn Borg believes Roger Federer will retire in 2016

The great Bjorn Borg believes Roger Federer will retire in 2016.

Roger Federer is expected to retire at the end of the upcoming season, according to Bjorn Borg. The five-time Wimbledon victor Borg believes the Swiss, who is chasing 17 grand slam titles, will want to end his career at the top. And that year might present Federer with the chance to compete for gold in the Brazilian Olympics. “Federer still has the motivation, is still going out and working really hard – he wants to go out and win more tournaments and more grand slam tournaments,” Borg stated. Federer turns 34 in August. “I believe he will play for another year.”

The 59-year-old Swede said, “I think next year he wants to try to go for the Olympics in Rio, and then after next year I think he will step away from the game,” in an interview with Live@Wimbledon. I hope not. Borg became the first male professional to win 11 Grand Slam singles titles between 1974 and 1981. He won five straight at Wimbledon and six at the French Open. In addition, he won 15 Grand Prix Super Series crowns and three year-end championships.

However, at the age of 26, he gave up tennis in 1983, and his attempt to return in the early 1990s was fruitless. Borg and Rod Laver, two of the greatest players of all time, were among the Royal Box luminaries yesterday.
