Alan Shearer was left shocked by one particular decision from VAR in Manchester United’s win against Chelsea on Wednesday night.
It was yet another disappointing result in the Premier League for Chelsea, this time losing 2-1 away at Man United.
Scott McTominay was the match-winner after a scoring a goal in each half at Old Trafford, which meant that Cole Palmer’s equaliser on the stroke of half-time was in vein.
In fairness, the hosts created enough to win this match several times over
Shearer criticism of VAR
Alan Shearer was left shocked by an intervention from VAR to give United a penalty early in the contest when the game was still goalless. Eventually, Bruno Fernandes’ spot-kick was saved by Robert Sanchez, but it didn’t impact the result of the match.
Enzo Fernandez conceded a penalty after standing on Antony in the box after possession had gone.
For Shearer, he was surprised to see an interference from VAR, with the referee initially waving away appeals for a penalty. He did later change his mind after looking at the monitor, though.
We were like the referee originally. I certainly didn’t think [it was a penalty]. I know that you then slow it down,” Shearer told Amazon Prime Sport (9:15pm, 6 December).
“What I would say is we were told it was going to be a very high bar and for the referee to make a clear and obvious error. If he gives that you say okay he’s not going to change his mind. But because he hadn’t give it, then I was surprised that VAR sent him to the screen. They can’t complain it’s on the top of the foot, but I’m not sure there’s enough to overturn that.”
Speaking on Amazon Prime Sport’s coverage, Ally McCoist described the Fernandez challenge as “stupid”.
Manchester United deserved win over Chelsea
We’ve seen Chelsea play some of their best football this season against the top teams, but it was a really off-night from so many of the players at Old Trafford.
The team were carved open at will by United, who will be astounded they only scored twice.
It’s another night that Mauricio Pochettino learned his side are still a long way off it.
