‘Still giving the ball away’: Pundit criticises £280,000-a-week player who Chelsea sold back in June

Craig Burley has criticised Kai Havertz – who Chelsea sold back in June – for his performances at Arsenal.

The 51-year-old was speaking on ESPN.

So, what has been said about Kai Havertz? Let’s take a look.

What’s the story?

Well, Chelsea sold the Germany international to Arsenal for a sum of £65m back in June, and he penned a contract worth £280,000-a-week in north London.

It came as a surprise to many, given the fact Havertz largely struggled at Stamford Bridge – he scored just 32 goals in 139 appearances.

Havertz may still be settling in at Arsenal, although he is already receiving criticism from some corners of the media – including Burley at ESPN – after going four games without a goal or assist.

He’s still got no confidence, he’s still not influencing games, he’s still giving the ball away, he’s still not getting in the right positions at the right time. He (Mikel Arteta) is going to have to drop him. Arsenal are a better side without him in the team.”

Burley certainly didn’t hold back with his thoughts on Havertz – to say the least.

Chelsea did superbly to get £65m for Havertz

After the 24-year-old scored just seven goals in 35 Premier League appearances last season, nobody would have expected him to move for £65m.

However, Chelsea somehow managed to obtain such a fee, taking a mere £6m loss on their initial £71m investment while also winning the Champions League in 2021 thanks to Havertz’s strike against Manchester City.

In that respect, it was excellent business all round – crucially, Arsenal do not seem to have improved by adding the German to their ranks, which was something many Chelsea fans were worried about.

As far as those at Stamford Bridge are concerned, they’ll hope it stays that way
