SPORTS FOOTBALL IS BETTER THAN BASEBALL… “Grateful To My Dad”
Pete Rose, the all-time MLB hits leader, has made a startling admission: he was far better at football than baseball. No, this isn’t what you’re thinking.
Rose told the host of Rob Gough’s brand-new podcast, “Talking to Titans With Rob Gough” (you can listen to the entire conversation here), that he was a lot better football player than a baseball star since his father was a terrific football player.
“Back in the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s, that’s all we had to do was sports,” Rose stated. “We were lacking the iPads, iPhones, and PCs. We lacked all of those things.
We played sports, and I was a three-sport athlete, but to be very honest, my dad made me a far better football player than a baseball player.”
That’s a rather stunning claim, especially in light of the fact that Rose would have been inducted into the Hall of Fame without the controversy surrounding his gambling.
Pete claims that as a child, he was just not interested in learning, but he nevertheless performed well enough to be allowed to continue playing.
Looking back, though, Rose—who was on the verge of attending the University of Tennessee—said he would have prioritized his studies more if he had known then what he knows now.
Pete declared, “If I had been a ding dong growing up, I would have just didn’t give a damn about education… I attended school recently and received the necessary grades to remain eligible.”
“But knowing what’s ahead of me in terms of attending college, if I were still playing in high school today, I would definitely try to get really good grades.” Back in the 1950s, we weren’t concerned about attending college.
Rose, who managed the Cincinnati Reds for seven seasons, offered advice for young people who might feel the same way about education as he did.
“I tell people today, kids especially, the more education you get the better off you’re gonna be.”
