Reece Potter Thought Kentucky’s Text Was a Prank—Now He’s Living the Dream at Home”
When Reece Potter’s phone lit up with a text from a Kentucky assistant coach, his first reaction wasn’t excitement—it was confusion. Maybe even disbelief.
“Is this real?” he thought. “This has to be a prank.”
In a college basketball world full of transfer portal chaos and wild recruitment stories, it’s easy to understand why the 7-foot-1 Lexington native second-guessed what could’ve been a life-changing moment. But this wasn’t a joke. Kentucky—his Kentucky—was calling.
And now, Reece Potter is coming home.
After a solid season at Miami (OH), where he averaged 6.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, and shot over 36% from beyond the arc, Potter has committed to the Kentucky Wildcats as a late but significant addition to Mark Pope’s roster for the 2025-26 season. The former Lexington Catholic standout brings size, skill, and something you simply can’t coach: an intimate understanding of what it means to wear blue and white in the Commonwealth.
From day one, Coach Pope has been vocal about his mission—rebuild Kentucky with players who not only have talent but belong here. Guys who feel the weight and pride of suiting up in Rupp Arena. With in-state stars like Trent Noah, Jasper Johnson, and Malachi Moreno already on board, adding Potter to that mix is a poetic fit.
“Reece Potter is a Lexington Catholic legend,” Pope said. “He’s a lengthy big with a rare mix of mobility, skill, and feel. He fits our system perfectly—but more importantly, he understands the responsibility of wearing this jersey.”
For Potter, it’s personal. From the moment he laced up sneakers at Lexington Catholic, the dream was clear: someday, somehow, wear “Kentucky” across his chest. That dream may have taken a scenic route, but it’s now a reality.
“I honestly thought it wasn’t real at first,” Potter said on the Aaron Torres Podcast. “Getting that message from Coach Fueger—it just didn’t feel possible.”
But it was. And now, the kid who grew up under the shadows of Rupp Arena’s historic banners will take the floor in front of a fanbase that already feels like family. And Big Blue Nation will be watching with pride.
Reece Potter isn’t just coming home—he’s coming full circle.
