Although he hasn’t closed on them yet, Mark Pope is attracting the best recruits to school; thus yet, he hasn’t secured a single top 25 recruit. Is that a problem that requires attention, or is it just a young employee forming relationships?
Is Kentucky having trouble closing? Getting top players on campus is half the battle when it comes to recruitment. Closing the deal is the other half. Additionally, supporters are currently questioning Kentucky’s batting average under Mark Pope.
Though July is well underway and a number of elite prospects have yet to make a decision, Kentucky’s 2026 class is empty. Three 4-star talents with great upside, Brayden Hawthorne, Malachi Moreno, and Jasper Johnson, have committed to the Cats in 2025. In his initial attempt last year, Pope was successful in persuading Noah to change his mind and Perry to stay. Misses are still beginning to accumulate. Dynamic guard Jason Crowe Jr. is predicted to pick Missouri, where his father might become a member of the faculty. Louisville is attracting Tay Kinney, a top in-state recruit. Is that Tyran Stokes? Although it’s still a tie, the Cats aren’t the overwhelming favourite. Also, Kentucky has not yet committed to anything for 2026.
No school has really dominated early 2026 recruitment, so that final point isn’t specific to Kentucky, but it begs the question: is Kentucky having trouble closing? Most likely not. Not quite yet. With NIL and the Transfer Portal changing roster construction tactics, the recruitment calendar has undergone significant change. This summer, the evaluation periods were reduced to only two (July 10–13 and July 17–20) due to the NCAA College Basketball Academy’s absence. Additionally, the Nike Peach Jam, the summer’s largest showcase, is still going on.
Let’s not mince words: Pope and his team are working. They have access to elite talent on campus. They are active, visible, and elevating Kentucky in the eyes of influential players. A different topic would be discussed if this were Year 3 with little traction. However, since last year’s off-season wasn’t complete, this is Year 1, and the groundwork is still being established.
Perhaps the larger tendency is strategic. Pope might just favour the portal. dependable goods. quantities that are known. That’s how you get ahead in today’s game. Does Kentucky have a closure issue, then? Try again in February. Right now, it’s merely a step in the process.
