Chelsea legend Pat Nevin is not sure if Mauricio Pochettino should continue using Levi Colwill at left-back.
Levi Colwill is naturally a central defender but has been playing at left-back this season, including in Chelsea‘s 1-0 defeat to Middlesbrough in the first leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final.
However, after the game, Pat Nevin questioned whether the 20-year-old should continue starting there on BBC Radio 5 Live.
Mauricio Pochettino is currently without Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella, but even before their injuries he was still playing Colwill at left-back.
Ian Maatsen is another option for the position — a more natural one than Colwill — but is set to join Borussia Dortmund on loan for the rest of the season.
Pat Nevin has doubts over Levi Colwill’s future as a left-back
After a tough game against Middlesbrough’s Isaiah Jones, Nevin is now wondering if Colwill will play at left-back for Chelsea again.
Speaking after their loss at the Riverside, he said: “It did not have to be anything complicated. Get it over the top of the Chelsea defenders and Isaiah Jones will run on to it. When he got to the byline he did not panic and that was the difference between him and the Chelsea players.
“Jones was doing it time and time again, he was a consistent danger. Do Chelsea play Levi Colwill at left-back again? There are a few questions for Chelsea.”
Levi Colwill is not Chelsea’s long-term left-back
Eventually, Colwill will probably move back to central defence. The player himself sees his future there, discussing the subject not too long ago.
For now, though, Pochettino looks set on deploying him as a left-back and it makes sense while Chilwell and Cucurella remain sidelined.
However, you can certainly question why the Argentine went with Colwill on the left side of his defence in the first place.
He started the season with Chilwell, Cucurella and Maatsen all fit but still opted to go with the England international in that position, which is quite interesting
