Pete Rose’s hit record ball fetches over $403,000 at auction.

CINCINNATI — Pete Rose’s record-breaking 4,192nd hit, a single off San Diego’s Eric Show on September 11, 1985, at Cincinnati’s Riverfront Stadium broke Ty Cobb’s hits record. The ball, which Rose swatted to left-center field, sold for more than $403,000 on Saturday, according to Lelands.com.

The ball came with paperwork, including copies of a notarized letter signed by Rose and a letter from the collector who originally purchased it from Rose, although Lelands did not disclose who purchased it.

According to Lelands, when the ball was first auctioned in 1987, it was the first sports item to bring in six figures.

Rose’s betting on Reds games during his time managing the team earned him a ban from baseball and disqualification from the Hall of Fame.
