Oweh’s return gives Mark Pope a proven star to build around in his second year at the helm

Otega Oweh’s Return to Kentucky Puts Him in Rarefied Air — and Sets Up a Monster Season in Lexington 💙🏀

In today’s college basketball landscape, especially at a blue-blood program like Kentucky, it’s rare to see a high-level player return after a breakout season. But Otega Oweh just did exactly that  and in doing so, he’s entered rare company in Wildcat history.

After averaging 16.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 1.7 assists, 1.7 steals, and 0.5 blocks per game in the 2024-25 season, Oweh had every reason to test NBA waters. He was a Second-Team All-SEC selection, an elite two-way guard, and one of the most dynamic players in the conference. Yet despite all the draft buzz, Oweh has chosen to come back for his senior season in Lexington  and that decision has instantly changed the outlook for Kentucky’s 2025-26 campaign.

The Impact? Massive.

Oweh’s return gives Mark Pope a proven star to build around in his second year at the helm. In an offseason full of elite transfers and top-tier recruits, Oweh is the emotional heartbeat  a leader who’s been through the fire and now returns with unfinished business.

And make no mistake: Oweh isn’t just another good player returning. According to Kentucky statistician Corey Price, Oweh becomes just the third player in the last 40 years at Kentucky to return after a season with at least:

  • 16.0+ PPG
  • 4.5+ RPG
  • 1.5+ APG
  • 1.5+ SPG
  • 0.5+ BPG

The only two other Wildcats to post those numbers and come back?
Tony Delk (1993–94) and Reggie Hanson (1989–90). That’s elite company  and a sign that Oweh’s return is truly historic for the Big Blue Nation.

NIL Changes the Game

It’s no secret that NIL (Name, Image & Likeness) has changed college sports forever  and for once, it’s helped a powerhouse like Kentucky retain elite talent rather than watch it walk out the door. In a different era, Oweh would be long gone. But thanks to NIL opportunities and a hunger to win big in Lexington, he’s back.

Oweh will likely begin the season on every Preseason All-American list, and he’s an early favorite for SEC Player of the Year. With a loaded roster and Oweh leading the charge, Kentucky is poised to open the year inside the Top 10 nationally, and anything less than a deep NCAA Tournament run will feel like a letdown.

Unfinished Business

Oweh’s decision to run it back isn’t just about personal accolades  it’s about legacy. It’s about taking Kentucky back to the top. And if he can help lead this new-look Wildcats roster to banner No. 9, he won’t just be in rare company stat-wise he’ll be a legend in Big Blue history.

Watch out, college basketball. The Cats are loaded, and Oweh is coming for everyone. 💪🐾
