Despite drawing 0-0 with Leicester at St. James’ Park on Monday, Newcastle was still guaranteed a spot in the Champions League.
Newcastle took control of the game right away, keeping the Foxes pinned inside their own half for the whole of the match. The Magpies managed an astounding 23 shots throughout the course of the game, forcing Leicester goalkeeper Daniel Iversen to make four saves, while the visitors were held without a shot until the 93rd minute. With a combined total of 12 shots, Alexander Isak, Callum Wilson, and Miguel Almiron should have scored, while Bruno Guimaraes came agonizingly close with a header from inside the six-yard box.
Timothy Castagne of Leicester instead nearly gave the Foxes a significant boost in their chances of avoiding relegation with a dangerous effort late in the game, but Nick Pope stopped him.
Bruno Guimaraes of Newcastle nearly placed his team at a disadvantage after only eight minutes when he caught Boubakary Soumare in the knee with a high boot, but he was fortunate to only receive a yellow card. When the Brazilian got on the end of a corner and headed at goal from close range but managed to hit the post, he had a chance to become the hero.
