Mohamed Salah set to make even more history as Liverpool contract decision couldn’t be clearer

Mohamed Salah remains contracted at Liverpool until 2025, but the Reds should already be looking to extend his deal as the Egypt star eyes a Premier League record.

As Mohamed Salah continues to make history for Liverpool, he is also moving closer to a record that no player has done before. The Egypt international signed a long-awaited contract extension in the summer of 2022 after months of cryptic messages by his agent on Twitter, and now he is already on the verge of entering the final 18 months of his current deal.

Liverpool may not have been sure whether Salah’s recent contract would be his last, but after his recent performances, and countless records broken, the Reds should prioritize getting a new deal over the line for him — not least for the history he is on the cusp of making.

Salah scored his 200th for Liverpool and 150th Premier League goal overall on Saturday afternoon against Crystal Palace. It’s a strike that was important in beginning Liverpool’s come-back, and also one that puts him level with club legend Michael Owen in joint 10th place in the all-time Premier League top scorers table.

Robbie Fowler is the only other former Liverpool player ranked, though both Fowler and Owen scored a number of goals in the league at spells with other clubs. Salah, meanwhile, scored just twice in England’s top flight during his spell with Chelsea before enjoying better success second time around with Liverpool under Jürgen Klopp.

It has been quite the journey for the Egypt international, who hasn’t always received fair plaudits for his production, but the numbers are clear — and he is destined to join a club of currently only two players that are ranked inside the top 10 for both Premier League goals and assists.

Only Wayne Rooney (third all-time top scorer and assists) and Frank Lampard (sixth all-time goals and fourth all-time assists) are ranked inside the top 10 for both, which will see Salah as the first non-English player to join the list. Salah is now just 25 goals behind Arsenal legend Thierry Henry in seventh, while his 65 assists (17th all-time) leave him just 15 away from David Beckham’s 80 in tenth place.

Steven Gerrard remains Liverpool’s all-time top assister in the Premier League, with 92, while James Milner’s 88 for multiple clubs sees one behind the former Reds captain him in ninth. Salah has a very real chance of surpassing both of those tallies if he extends his stay on Merseyside, and given his recent performances, the decision of whether or not to extend his stay is now clear.

A flourishing partnership with Darwin Núñez has seen the 31-year-old’s numbers increase, in a campaign in which Salah has delivered some of his best performances in a new ‘playmaker’ role. That gives him plenty of opportunities to break inside the top 10 of the Premier League all-time assists table as well.

And should he guide Liverpool to what would be a 20th league title victory this season, it is clear that his time on Merseyside should continue for as long as Klopp is in the dugout. Even when Salah didn’t play well against Crystal Palace, he was decisive with a goal and an assist. His contributions continue to be massive
