Caoimhin Kelleher, the goalkeeper for Liverpool, has been advised to quit the organization this summer in quest of first-team action.
On Off The Ball’s Football Saturday Podcast, Mark Lawrenson discussed the 24-year-old.
Last weekend, Caoimhin Kelleher faced Liverpool in his first Premier League start.
It might have been the Irishman’s final game for the club among the farewells for James Milner and Roberto Firmino.
Before the transfer window opened, Kelleher was said to be leaving the club.
His prospects have been constrained by Alisson Becker, probably the best goalkeeper in the Premier League.
The time in his career where he can no longer afford to be second-choice has come.
Kelleher needs to leave Liverpool this summer, according to Lawrenson.
He acknowledged that what he saw from Kelleher against Southampton didn’t impress him.
He attributed that, rather than his skill, to his limited playing time this season.
When asked if the 24-year-old should depart for first-team football at this time, Lawrenson responded, “He does. He wasn’t too good at Southampton, was he?
He appeared to be really rusty, but as you correctly point out, he needs to play.
“I wonder if they might simply sell him instead of allowing him go out on loan since they’re obviously trying to buy players Liverpool and they’re talking about him being £20m-odd.
That will be an interesting one most definitely.
“You saw him last week and you think, you need to be playing, wherever it is you just need to be playing.
Hugo Lloris is rumored to be on the verge of leaving Tottenham, thus the club is apparently interested in Kelleher.
Making a goalkeeper with only 21 professional appearances their first choice for the North London team may be viewed as a risk.
He will most certainly be too expensive for a Championship team, therefore the Premier League is where he needs to find the proper fit.
Goalkeepers are expected to move around a lot throughout the transfer period, with David Raya and Emiliano Martinez both being linked to moves.
Kelleher may now have the chance to leave Liverpool this summer and establish himself away from Anfield.
