Dominik Szoboszlai, a playmaker for RB Leipzig whose release clause at the Bundesliga team expires today, is being pursued by Liverpool.

Although Dominik Szoboszlai’s release clause does not expire until today, it was not necessary for any Liverpool (or Newcastle United) transfer move to occur today. However, all eyes are on the RB Leipzig player for further developments.

The offensive midfielder is admired by Liverpool, and things are swiftly shifting. He would be perfect for the right-sided number eight position at Anfield. Szoboszlai is reportedly interested in the transfer, and the Reds are eager to complete the deal. Newcastle allegedly moved aside as a sign of recognition.

It is not clear how much Leipzig would demand for Szoboszlai post-release clause, but the Bundesliga outfit does tend to sell at the right price. Regardless, Liverpool, The Times reports, is prepared to meet the $77m (£60m/€70m) valuation written into the player’s contract to seal the deal.

Should the deal be done, there is no doubt that Liverpool would be getting a perfect addition to its squad if the right fee is attached. Szoboszlai is excellent with and without the ball, and comes from a system not dissimilar to the way that Liverpool plays.

Already experienced but still young enough to kick on and improve significantly in the coming seasons, the Hungarian is the ideal next addition after Alexis Mac Allister as Liverpool’s midfield revamp continues. In terms of the new-look system with more attacking number eights, he could not be more perfect for Jürgen Klopp.

He has one of the best right feet in Europe — his technique is unbelievable,” Guido Schäfer, a former teammate of Klopp’s who now covers Leipzig as a journalist, told The Anfield Wrap earlier this week.

“He is a serious player and he has all the skills that you need, he believes in his skills and he loves Klopp. If Liverpool is able to pay this month, then they have to buy him

Szoboszlai is ready for the next step in his career and has spoken about Liverpool in the past, naming Klopp as the best manager in the world and admitting earlier this month that he was curious what playing for a coach like that could do to his game.

“It is very important that Szoboszlai stays in Leipzig, but he wants to leave,” Schäfer continued. “He said ‘I want to make the next step’ and he loves the Premier League. He is a potential superstar.

“If he can choose between the Champions League with Newcastle and Europa League with Klopp, he will choose Klopp. This is the outstanding club. It is very sure that Szoboszlai wants to go to Liverpool and not Newcastle or Man City.”

Szoboszlai is under contract until 2025 and his release clause is only valid until the end of today. The clock is ticking for Liverpool to get a deal over the line before the clause expires, but it appears that things are heading in the right direction as it stands.
