A USMNT forward who has been on Liverpool’s radar is now following in the footsteps of Luis Suárez and club could soon make another transfer move for him.
Many at Liverpool still regard Luis Suárez as one of the best ever to have worn the red shirt. His time at Anfield may have been relatively brief in comparison to other club legends but it was certainly memorable.
Suárez came, conquered, caused chaos, and lit up Anfield with his exquisite skills and hunger for success before moving to Barcelona and accomplishing his dream of winning the Champions League. But before Liverpool and the heights of Barcelona, the Uruguayan started his European adventure in relative obscurity at FC Groningen.
In his first season in the Eredivisie, Suárez scored 10 goals and registered six assists during the regular part of the campaign in 29 matches, which was enough to earn him a move to Ajax
Groningen has always been a club of opportunity. It’s where stars like Virgil van Dijk and Arjen Robben first made their mark, and while it may not be the biggest team in the Netherlands it is famous for giving young superstars a chance.
The latest is a North American star who is very much following in Suárez’s footsteps. USMNT forward Ricardo Pepi scored 12 goals and registered three assists in the regular Eredivisie campaign in 29 games for Groningen last season, which is almost identical to Suárez’s return in his first season at around the same age.
And what was even more impressive about 20-year-old Pepi’s output is that he managed to do all this at while Groningen endured one of its worst seasons in recent history and was relegated from the Eredivisie.
