Brighton & Hove Albion are reportedly still interested in signing Levi Colwill, with Liverpool also chasing the Chelsea defender.
According to the Daily Mail, the Seagulls remain eager on recruiting the 20-year-old England youth international on a permanent deal, with Colwill playing a key role for Brighton last season in their historic Premier League finish that saw the south coast side finish in a European place.
With Brighton already having a £40m bid rejected by Chelsea for Colwill, it should be quite the surprise from Liverpool’s perspective that Roberto De Zerbi’s side are still interested in the defender, with the Blues eager to keep hold of the wonderkid for as long as possible.
Lauded as a ‘phenomenal’ player by The Final Third, Colwill is on his way to becoming one of the best defenders in the Premier League after another progressive year in his development with Brighton. And for Liverpool, they can’t allow the Seagulls to beat them to the youngster.
Indeed, Jurgen Klopp is keen to add to his central defence this summer having spent big on midfielders. However, with Brighton now still interested in Colwill, there is now a real threat that the Reds could miss out on a key target in the Chelsea talent
Whilst a third central midfielder could now be the most important signing Liverpool make in the coming days with Fabinho’s exit drawing closer, adding a young defender could be even more crucial, with Colwill the best option out there in the market.
As a result, Brighton signing Colwill would be a mammoth blow for the Reds’ summer plans, with the defender potentially good enough to start for Liverpool next season and to establish himself as a long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk in the starting XI.
