Liverpool are waiting’: Fabrizio Romano says ‘world-class’ player is about to leave Anfield

It is all down to Al-Ittihad now in their pursuit of Liverpool midfielder Fabinho with the Reds now waiting on the Saudi Pro League outfit to submit the official documents for his transfer.

Fabrizio Romano shared this morning that Al-Ittihad’s president had been on the deal since Sunday, with Liverpool standing by to check over the documents and give it the green light.

This update comes after reports earlier in the week stating that the deal was close to collapsing with the Brazilian returning to the Liverpool squad for pre-season.

Fabinho joined the Reds from Monaco for a reported initial fee of £39million in 2018. Since his arrival, the 29-year-old has made 219 appearances for the club. He has scored 11 and assisted ten in that time during which Liverpool have lifted each major trophy there is to win.

He was a standout performer in the Reds’ famous demolition of Barcelona in the Champions League to overturn a three-goal deficit and progress into the final of the competition thanks to a 4-0 victory in the 2018/19 season, to go alongside multiple other impressive individual performances. The midfielder will be remembered as an icon for what he achieved during his time on Merseyside alone.

The news of Fabinho’s probable departure follows Jordan Henderson’s exit, also to the Saudi Pro League, with the club captain parting ways for Al-Ettifaq.

A bonus for Liverpool is that they are set to recoup the transfer fee they paid for the Brazilian five years ago with the Saudi outfit due to fork out £40million for his services – this will no doubt help the Reds in their pursuit of Southampton midfielder Romeo Lavia.

What will follow the departure of Fabinho?

Labelled a ‘word-class’ player by teammate Thiago, Jurgen Klopp’s men are in need of midfield reinforcements now more than ever once Fabinho departs.

Signing Lavia would be a step in the right direction, but it would be naïve to expect Liverpool to stop there this summer when it comes to bolstering their middle men.

The weather may not be, but this transfer window for the Reds is surely about to begin heating up.
