In a recent interview, basketball legend Larry Bird opened up about his complex relationship with fellow NBA icon Earvin “Magic” Johnson. While Bird expressed genuine admiration for Earvin Johnson as a person, he admitted that his feelings toward “Magic” Johnson, the basketball persona, were less warm.
“I had a little problem with him,” Bird said, reflecting on their intense rivalry during the 1980s when the Boston Celtics and Los Angeles Lakers battled for NBA supremacy. Bird explained that the distinction between Earvin and Magic was crucial. Earvin, the man off the court, was someone Bird liked and respected. Their off-court interactions were often friendly and filled with mutual respect. However, Magic Johnson, the player, represented a formidable adversary who stood in the way of Bird’s pursuit of championships.
Bird elaborated on the nature of their rivalry, noting that it was marked by fierce competition and an unrelenting drive to win. “When we were on the court, it was all business,” Bird stated. “Magic was one of the toughest competitors I ever faced. It wasn’t personal; it was about the game and winning.” This professional rivalry, while intense, never overshadowed the personal respect Bird had for Earvin.
Despite this, Bird acknowledged that their competitive fire occasionally spilled over. “There were times when the rivalry got heated, and it was easy to forget that we were more alike than different,” he said. Bird and Johnson both hailed from humble beginnings, used their skills to achieve greatness, and were pivotal in transforming the NBA into a global phenomenon.
Over time, Bird and Johnson’s relationship evolved from rivalry to friendship. Bird emphasized that understanding the difference between Earvin and Magic helped him appreciate Johnson more fully. “Looking back, I realize how much I respected Earvin as a competitor and a friend,” Bird concluded, highlighting the deep bond that formed between two of basketball’s greatest legends.
