Frank Lampard, the interim manager of Chelsea, believes Enzo Fernandez has a bright future with the team.
The €120m January acquisition has occasionally stood out for a difficult squad.
“Enzo gets it,” Lampard remarked. He has a lot of talent individually and understands what is expected of him in training and as a Chelsea player. Some athletes simply grasp it. When you’re working with someone, you grasp something quite quickly, and he does too.
“With Enzo, I’ve been pleased with him as a player, his attitude toward practice and competition, his tenacity, and something about him, when he speaks very little the language but is quickly picking it up.
I have a lot of confidence that Enzo will play a significant role in what transpires here in the club’s future. Due to his timing and the fact that he has already made a significant transfer to the Premier League and won the World Cup, I do feel a little sorry for him. At the end of this season, he should be rightfully kicking back, putting his feet up, and exclaiming, “What a year.” However, I believe he will be crucial to the future in terms of his ability to influence it.
“My personal view of Enzo is that he could play in probably all the midfield roles, but I think seeing him train and play and getting a feel for him, he probably has more to offer than to be a single-six, as much as he can play as a double-six, where he can join into the game more, play as an eight, and offer the really good attributes he’s got across his game,” continued Lampard.
In my experience here, he has shown to be the most naturally gifted six out of a midfield that doesn’t have many natural sixes. However, I haven’t actually asked him that question. Since that is where Enzo has played, kudos to him for never telling me the position wasn’t for him. His approach has always been to put the team first.
But I believe that going forward, he can participate in the game much more. He played in the double-six against Manchester City, and we caught glimpses of it there and there. He ended up a little bit higher up the field, and he has a great eye for playing forward.
I believe that as a team, we haven’t been playing forward enough lately, being more direct higher up the field, and finding passes that really challenge the opposition. Being up the pitch is beneficial for both Enzo and the player who can play the pass, as well.
