Jamie Carragher has put Chelsea’s Enzo Fernandez above Arsenal’s Declan Rice when rating £100million-plus midfielders.
There’s been some colossal transfers in the world of football in 2023, with some of the best young midfielders in the game moving for huge fees.
Chelsea have signed both Enzo Fernandez (£106.8million – Sky Sports) and Moises Caicedo (£115million – Sky Sports) for mega deals this calendar year. Elsewhere, Arsenal recruited Declan Rice (£105million – Sky Sports) and Jude Bellingham secured a glamorous transfer to Real Madrid (£115million – BBC).
Sky Sports pundit Carragher has ranked the aforementioned quartet from one to four based on current ability.
He told Sky Sports: “I would put Jude Bellingham as number one. I may put Fernandez second because what I saw yesterday [against Liverpool], if we see that a lot more going forward, he looks like a complete midfielder, certainly if he adds some more goals. I would go with Declan Rice next. I would go for Caicedo, who I am a huge fan, I would just put him fourth on this list right now and see how he does at Chelsea.”
Fernandez, 22, put on a clinic in Chelsea’s 1-1 draw against Liverpool on Sunday to remind everyone why the Blues spent big to get him in January.
The Argentine World Cup winner has the potential to offer a lot in both halves of the pitch, which goes a long way to justifying a nine-figure transfer sum.
We’re certainly talking about four of the best young midfielders in the sport, so it’ll be interesting to see where they’re all at a few years further down the line.
In our view, Chelsea are sitting with two gems in Fernandez and Caicedo.
