Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher has plotted how Jurgen Klopp’s side can use the final days of the transfer market to challenge Manchester City for the title.
Jamie Carragher has insisted that Liverpool can challenge Manchester City for the Premier League title if the club make the right decisions in the final days of the transfer market.
Last season, Jurgen Klopp’s side fell out of the title race at an early stage, which ultimately cost them a Champions League. It has been a summer of change at Anfield with Liverpool bringing an entirely new midfield, following the sales of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho. Despite picking up seven points from their first three games, there is a sense that Liverpool are in a transitional phase.
However, Sky Sports pundit Carragher disagrees. The Merseyside club have been in title races with Manchester City in four of the last six seasons and the former Liverpool defender believes that his old club are only two players away from battling for Premier League glory, once again.
Liverpool have been Manchester City’s biggest rivals for the last four or five years,” Carragher told Sky Sports. “Arsenal came to the fore last season, but why can’t Liverpool be that team again this season?
“The squad that Liverpool have right now isn’t good enough to challenge Manchester City, but they’ve got to go for it in the transfer market this week in terms of bringing in another defender and midfielder. That has to happen because Liverpool can still be the biggest rivals to Manchester City.”
With only a few days remaining in the transfer window, Liverpool will have to move quickly, if Carragher’s theory is to be put to the test. The club’s midfield may have been overhauled but the pundit pointed to a trio of players as key reasons why Liverpool should not be disregarded as potential contenders for City’s crown.
“Liverpool have made more than a decent start to the season, but when you’ve got someone like Alisson – a world-class goalkeeper, maybe the best goalkeeper in the world – Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah, these are players who are not coming to the end of their careers but are at that stage where if Liverpool are going to go on to do something big again, it has to happen in the next year or two,” Carragher continued.
“So really go for it in the last week of the transfer window to get a squad that is good enough to challenge Manchester City.”
