In an exhibition match, Michael van Gerwen faces Phil Taylor and demonstrates complete lack of mercy.
The titans of darts squared off in an exhibition match that saw Michael van Gerwen demolish former opponent Phil Taylor.
On Saturday night in Chester, England, two of the greatest darts players ever rolled back the years to compete against one another. In what was dubbed “The Last Dance” between the former rivals, Van Gerwen, the current world No. 2, faced the 63-year-old.
However, the 29-year-old Dutchman soundly defeated Taylor 4-0, leaving everyone looking for a close match extremely disappointed. Van Gerwen put on a clinic, recording an average of 111.33 and showcasing his best form of late.
With an average of just 85.12, Taylor, who retired in 2018 and will rejoin the World Senior Darts Tour in 2023, was a pitiful player. And when Van Gerwen showed no mercy to a man he had previously enjoyed titanic clashes with, darts fans were left both shocked and entertained.
“MvG still hates Taylor then,” wrote one X user who posted a picture of the score and averages alongside the tweet, “111 average, bloody hell Michael take it easy mate.” Another user tweeted the same picture.
“Why did MvG play this like his life depended on it lol,” questioned a third, and “just bullying an old man at this juncture,” a fourth.
It’s possible that MvG wanted to cement his reputation as the greatest darts thrower of all time by using the match. The Dutchman holds the second-highest number of victories among players with three PDC World Championships.
