In an amazing March Madness statistic, Zach Edey surpasses Larry Bird and David Robinson while leading Purdue to the national championship game.
Officially, Zach Edey is in exclusive company.
With a decisive 63-50 victory over NC State in the Final Four on Saturday, the Purdue Boilermakers standout propelled his team into the national championship game.
7 feet 4 inches With 20 points and 12 rebounds at the end of the game, Edey set a Big Ten record with his 29th double-double.
Edey currently owns the record for the most straight 20-point, 10-rebound games in the NCAA Tournament during the previous 50 years after recording another double-double.
That puts him ahead of Boston Celtics star Larry Bird (4) and San Antonio Spurs hero David Robinson (5).
In addition, he made history by being the first Big Ten player to ever record at least five double-doubles during one NCAA Tournament run.
The two-time National Player of the Year was an unstoppable force on the inside all night long, finishing the half with 14 points and 8 rebounds.
Big man DJ Burns of NC State was at a loss for words against Edey and had to resort to make him laugh in an attempt to stop him.
At the half, No. 1 Purdue led the No. 11 Wolfpack 35–29, and they maintained that advantage in the second half.
For the first time since they fell to UCLA in the 1969 national championship game, Purdue is in the title game.
