In a matchup of undefeated teams, Inter Miami defeats Columbus Crew with a single goal prior to 60,614

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami’s unbeaten run faced a tough challenge against another undefeated opponent, but the South Florida club emerged victorious through gritty defending, a bit of luck, and an unexpected goal scorer.

Benjamin Cremaschi netted the game’s only goal in the 30th minute, courtesy of a deflection off his left shoulder as he attempted a diving header on a cross from Marcelo “Chelo” Weigandt. That lone goal secured a 1-0 win over the Columbus Crew at Huntington Bank Field in Cleveland on Saturday.

The clean sheet lifted coach Javier Mascherano’s squad to the top of the Eastern Conference standings with 18 points and a 5-3-0 record. “We played one of the best teams in the league, and we had to be very solid defensively to stop them,” Mascherano said. “They’re a very dangerous attacking team. … We improved as the match progressed.”
