‘I was betrayed ‘Fabio Carvalho had to leave Liverpool and the ‘no-brainer’ of joining RB Leipzig

When Fabio Carvalho left Fulham last summer, he wanted to join a club where he would play.

Under Marco Silva, the gifted midfielder had become a key part of a Premier League promotion-winning team and, amid interest from across Europe, he knew the option of regular top-flight game time with the Londoners was on the table.

Liverpool’s injury record is, along with his talent, one of the reasons that prompted Klopp to look to Carvalho, but the manager has more options now in the form of the newly-signed Cody Gakpo and the return to fitness of Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota.2 Mar 2023.

Fabio Carvalho has joined RB Leipzig on a season-long loan. The Athletic reported that the clubs were in talks over a temporary switch for the 20-year-old, who was keen for more playing time after falling out of favour under Jurgen Klopp.

What is abundantly clear — and has been for some time — is that Liverpool must rebuild their midfield this summer. Their attack is also looking like a blunter force than in previous seasons. In Liverpool’s last seven league fixtures, they have failed to score in four games. Their goalless draw at Selhurst Park was their third in the league this season. That is as many as they had mustered in their past three seasons combined.

If there was a time to give Carvalho another chance, surely it has been in that run of games?

He remains highly rated and the gushing tribute issued by Pep Lijnders in pre-season is as relevant today as it was when he first said it.

“He’s a player who feels really comfortable between the lines, who has all the skills to break the last line with all different ways: with a dribble, with a pass, with a combination. So safe on the ball in these moments. Always with the goal in mind. That’s the mentality and attitude we search for him as well. So we’re really happy with him, he’s a real prospect.”

For now, though, Carvalho remains just that: a prospect. And one that must be patient.
