Hardley Gilmore IV Returns to Kentucky After Brief Nebraska Stint
Hardley Gilmore IV is back in Lexington. The former four-star wide receiver has rejoined the Kentucky Wildcats just months after transferring to Nebraska, according to Pete Nakos of On3. His return marks a surprising twist in what’s already been an eventful start to his college football career.
A Short Stay in Lincoln
Gilmore originally entered the transfer portal on December 28, 2024, following a freshman season at Kentucky that hinted at his upside. After missing the first half of the year with a broken collarbone, he made his presence felt late in the season, recording six receptions for 153 yards and a touchdown in just five games. His speed and ability to stretch the field gave Kentucky’s offense a boost down the stretch.
Shortly after entering the portal, Gilmore committed to Nebraska, where he linked up with former Kentucky receivers coach Daikiel Shorts and ex-teammate Dane Key. But the fresh start didn’t last long. In March, Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule confirmed Gilmore had been dismissed from the team, with no public explanation given.
A New-Look Receiver Room
Now back at Kentucky, Gilmore enters a completely retooled receiving corps. Since his departure, the Wildcats have brought in veteran transfers Kendrick Law (Alabama), Troy Stellato (Clemson), and J.J. Hester (Oklahoma). They’ll join returners Ja’Mori Maclin and Fred Farrier II, creating a deep and dynamic group under new wide receivers coach L’Damian Washington.
Where Gilmore fits into that mix remains uncertain. While his athleticism and familiarity with the program could give him a leg up, he’ll need to prove himself again—on and off the field.
Off-Field Issues Still Unresolved
Gilmore’s legal status could complicate his return. He was charged with misdemeanor assault in December after allegedly striking someone during an altercation at a Lexington storage facility. The case remains unresolved, and it’s unclear how it might affect his standing with the team or his eligibility.
A Chance to Start Fresh
Despite the rocky path, Gilmore has a shot at a clean slate. If he can stay healthy, focused, and out of trouble, the talent that made him a top-400 recruit is still very much there. For both Gilmore and Kentucky, this reunion could be the second chance they both need.
