Frank Lampard ‘could take over at Major League Soccer team

Frank Lampard ‘could take over at Major League Soccer team Charlotte FC’ with the Chelsea legend and ex-Everton boss in the running with Dean Smith for the coaching role.

Reports on Tuesday night said that Lampard, the former Chelsea and Everton manager who played in Major League Soccer with New York City FC, is in the running for the job alongside former Aston Villa coach Dean Smith.

The Athletic says Lampard and Dean Smith, the former Aston Villa and Norwich coach, are finalists for the role and Charlotte hopes to have someone appointed by late December.

Charlotte made the MLS playoffs for the first time in history this season before losing to New York Red Bulls and parting ways with coach Christian Lattanzio.

Lampard has been out of work as a coach since his second spell at Chelsea, where he returned on an interim basis after the Premier League club fired Graham Potter.

Prior to that, Lampard had just shy of a year at Everton, keeping the team in the Premier League in his first half season but was sacked days before he completed his first year at the team.

As a player, Lampard won every possible trophy at club level with Chelsea and ended his career in MLS with New York City FC.

Smith, meanwhile, was last at Leicester but was unsuccessful in trying to keep the team in the Premier League after taking over in April with only eight games left to play.

He was coach of Aston Villa for three years, leading the team from the Championship back into the Premier League.

Charlotte are preparing for their third ever season in Major League Soccer in 2024, looking to build on reaching the playoffs in 2023.
