Clinton Morrison has urged Mauricio Pochettino to consider selling some Chelsea players after “fantastic” Everton ace Abdoulaye Doucoure made them look silly.
Doucoure gave Everton the lead in Sunday’s (10 December) Premier League clash with a calm finish after Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s initial effort was saved by Robert Sanchez.
The Mali international was not picked up in a move that left Chelsea’s players looking around at each other wondering who was supposed to be picking up who
Speaking in his role as a pundit on Sky Sports News, Morrison said [10 December, 3:15pm]: “There’s six players ahead of the ball but no legs in midfield that can get back.
“Dwight McNeil goes past [Conor] Gallagher like he’s not there – he should foul him. He plays a great ball to Calvert-Lewin.
The save from Sanchez is outstanding, but then it comes to Doucoure. He drills it into the bottom corner – a fantastic goal, brilliant.
But the Chelsea players are nowhere near him, nowhere near. We talk about Pochettino and the big job he’s got there. There’s a lot of players they’ve signed that they’ve got to get rid of.”
Poor defending
Chelsea really are a mess right now, even though this squad has had a billion pounds spent on it. Pochettino is a respected manager, but he is simply unable to get a tune out of too many of them.
Everton, while not at their best, were able to exploit their opponents – the best example being this breakthrough goal from Doucoure.
McNeil broke clear of Gallagher in the middle of the pitch and played in Calvert-Lewin, who will perhaps be annoyed he did not score himself. Not that it mattered as Doucoure was left alone to fire in.
The Toffees midfielder has now scored 11 Premier League goals since Sean Dyche took charge almost a year ago – only Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard has scored as many in the competition in that period [Sky Sports Statto].
