Even though I’m not Australian, Judith Durham’s unofficial anthem makes me cry.

Judith Durham passed away on August 8, and your obituary noticeably leaves out her contribution to the song “I Am Australian,” which is performed at sporting events and on Australia Day and has since become the unofficial national anthem of Australia. It is most likely the best gift she could give her country. This mommy, who misses her son in Sydney and remembers singing it after drinking too much, gets emotional when she hears it.

I still have a copy of the July 30, 2001, story by Nancy Banks-Smith honoring Horace, the computer that subtitled the Diana and Charles wedding (The bride wore quistls). I still chuckle aloud at that. After reading her post about June Spencer departing The Archers (Nancy Banks-Smith on June Spencer: 70 years of muck and bullocks!, August 8), I’m delighted to see that Nancy hasn’t lost the touch.

• Zoe Williams’ dread of being expelled from feminism perplexes me. I maintained my name after getting married because of my feminist beliefs, until I met my mortgage advisor on August 9. Is Williams the name of her mother? If not, I don’t understand how maintaining the name of one patriarch over another is feminist.

• During trips to the US, I gradually realized that people there—at least in New York City, anyway—don’t eat soft-boiled eggs. In order to prevent bursting, we are now taking egg cups and an egg prick (Letters, 9 August).
