After failing to advance the AFCON hosts past the last-16 round, Javier Aguirre’s reign as Egypt manager came to an abrupt end on Saturday.
After their unexpected elimination from the Africa Cup of Nations round of 16, Egypt fired head coach Javier Aguirre.
Egypt under Aguirre was shocked on Saturday when the AFCON hosts fell to South Africa 1-0 in Cairo, failing to advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2004.
Hany Abou-Rida, head of the Egyptian Football Association (EFA), subsequently announced his resignation and confirmed the departure of all technical and administrative employees.
Abou-Rida claimed he will continue to lead the organizing committee for the 2019 AFCON despite his resignation and his demand for other board members to do the same.
Following their elimination from the 2018 World Cup in Russia’s group stage, Egypt hired Mexican manager Aguirre.
Aguirre, a former coach for Mexico and Japan, agreed to a four-year contract to succeed Hector Cuper last year.
Naturally, I am accountable,” the 60-year-old reporter said following the game on Saturday.
“I bear all the consequences because I chose the players and the formation, and we are all disappointed about the early elimination.
