Chelsea are still being linked with AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan.
He’s without doubt one of the best players in his position in the world, and one of the certain major upgrades on Robert Sanchez who is at all attainable.
But let’s be real – we’re in financial fair play trouble already, and the amount it would take to sign Maignan would be enormous. He’s 28 and just reaching his peak, and after winning Serie A, it looks like Stefano Pioli’s project is starting to come apart a little.
What plays into our hands here is Maignan’s contract situation. He’s only got until 2026 left on it, and by this summer Milan are going to have to start taking any bids very seriously.
FootMercato are claiming that Chelsea are among the teams who will be most hotly on the Frenchman’s tail by then, and that wouldn’t surprise us. Depending on our January business, we might be in a stronger financial position come the summer, and the €45m rated keeper could just be attainable.
