Domantas Sabonis of the Kings enters Wilt Chamberlain territory with his most recent achievement.
Because of his consistent record of double-doubles, Domantas Sabonis has been all the Sacramento Kings could have imagined at the center position. For whatever reason, Sabonis was left off of the All-Star team this season, but his influence as a rebounder has made him perhaps the finest big man in the game. The 27-year-old is leading the league in rebounds again after taking the lead in that category the previous season, but this time around he is averaging a career-high 13.6 boards per game.
Sabonis has been accumulating double-doubles the entire season. On March 31, Sabonis scored 17 points and pulled down 11 rebounds as the Kings defeated the Utah Jazz 127-106. This double-double was noteworthy since it was Sabonis’ 70th of the 2023–24 season to record a double-double.
Now that he’s a member of this rare club, the star of the Kings will always remember being in the NBA history next to Wilt Chamberlain.
The brilliant double-double play of Domantas Sabonis
Sabonis became one of the few players in league history to record at least 70 double-doubles in a season since the NBA/ABA merger, joining Truck Robinson, Kevin Garnett, Hakeem Olajuwon, and Moses Malone (five times) with his 70th double-double in 74 games overall, according to StatMuse.
The fact that Sabonis recently became one of just two players in league history to record at least 1,000 rebounds and 600 assists in a single season is even more remarkable than Chamberlain’s feat. Chamberlain accomplished this in the seasons 1966–1967 and 1967–1968. The legend finished with 1,957 total rebounds and 630 assists in that inaugural campaign. He added 1,952 rebounds and 702 assists in total after that incredible season.
Sabonis has 615 assists and 1,007 rebounds so far this season. With 74 games played, Sabonis has amassed 70 double-doubles, nine more than Nikola Jokic. In addition, he leads the league with 26 triple-doubles, compared to Jokic’s 23.
