Ceyhun Kazanci, the sporting director for Besiktas, called Liverpool to inquire about acquiring Joel Matip this summer.

Matip has entered the final year of his Reds contract and could currently be for sale. The 31-year-old is also reportedly wanted by Besiktas, according to the Turkish publication Fanatik.

They assert that Kazanci recently spoke with Liverpool while in England to inquire about a potential Matip deal.

Additionally, it is reported that the sports director spoke with the center-back’s agent to learn more about his client’s wage expectations.

Fanatik assert that “negotiations are continuing” with regard to Matip, but they make no mention of Liverpool’s stance over his release.

Liverpool set for Matip decision

If a decent bid comes in for Matip, you’d imagine Liverpool wouldn’t be averse to accepting it.

With 12 months left to run on his contract and turning 32 later this month, it’s unlikely to be much at all. But after losing four more players on free transfers this summer, anything is better than nothing.

Liverpool can’t really afford to let themselves turn into a club who simply won’t sell players when the time is right

Nevertheless, if Matip is to leave Anfield this summer, a replacement will have to be found. He may no longer be a first choice pick under Jurgen Klopp, but he still started 12 Premier League games last season.

With questions marks dangling over the fitness of Joe Gomez and Ibrahima Konate, Liverpool will need a new face on board.

Clearly, it will cost them a lot more to get someone in than they’ll receive for Matip. But every little helps in the transfer market.

If Besikitas do follow up their interest with a concrete offer, then the Reds will have decision to make.
