Sunday afternoon sees one of the Premier League’s all-time greatest fixtures come around again as Newcastle United host Liverpool.
Historically the games between Newcastle and Liverpool have been fantastic spectacles for the neutral, and more often than not the Liverpool fan too.
Newcastle’s recent record against The Reds is abysmal, in fact the Magpies have only beaten Liverpool nine times in 52 Premier League games, fortunately all nine of those wins have come at St James’ Park.
Newcastle are in a great place to end the Liverpool curse
With the trajectory Newcastle are on now that dreadful record should soon be a thing of the past as Eddie Howe‘s men have more than what it takes to beat Liverpool as things stand.
Former Arsenal and England goalkeeper David Seaman certainly thinks so too with him saying on his latest epsiode of Seaman Says: “It’s intriguing as to when players come in they hit the ground running at Newcastle. They’re not afraid.
I am edging towards it from what I’ve seen of Liverpool, especially at the back, they’re not back to their tight defence, giving little chances away with Allison knocking the ball out of play really weirdly almost putting them under severe pressure.
“I think with this one though, I’m going to go with Newcastle. I’m going to go 2-1 Newcastle.”
The Liverpool curse has to end some time and there’s no time like the present.
Can the Mo Salah uncertainty be a positive for Newcastle?
Newcastle will be looking to bounce back from last week’s defeat to Manchester City where it took them a long time to get a foothold in the game. Eddie Howe will know that they’ll need to come out fast at Liverpool and put them on the back-foot from the off.
As Seaman alluded to, the Liverpool defense is nowhere near its best right now and we should be taking full advantage of that. Also there’s the big question mark hanging over the club regarding Mo Salah’s future which could be a distraction that works in Newcastle’s favour.
If nothing else, we need a win just to stick it to Jurgen Klopp who just can’t stop having digs at Newcastle lately
