Chelsea believe one of their fringe players could soon be worth a lot of money.
Ian Maatsen has barely played for Chelsea this season and, as a result, is now set to join Borussia Dortmund on loan.
And according to The Telegraph, the reason why the Blues are allowing the left-back to head to Dortmund temporarily for a small fee is because they believe it could help his value to increase drastically like what happened with Jude Bellingham and Jadon Sancho during their time in Germany.
The same outlet claims that Chelsea’s plan is to then sell Maatsen at the end of the season when his loan finishes.
The 21-year-old has made just one start in the Premier League this term, so this is a very good move for him.
Ian Maatsen’s value could skyrocket at Borussia Dortmund
Dortmund are the second biggest club in Germany after Bayern Munich and are still in the Champions League.
A lot of eyes will be on them and thus Maatsen, so if he impresses there, then his value is likely to go up as he draws interest.
Ultimately, then, it is quite a good move for everyone really. Maatsen is going to a team who should be able to afford him more opportunities, Dortmund are getting a very talented and versatile player to help them for the rest of the campaign and Chelsea are increasing their chances of being able to sell their asset for a good fee in the summer.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Maatsen has actually just extended his contract, so the Blues have safeguarded themselves here. If this loan spell at Dortmund goes well, then Chelsea’s plan may actually end up materialising.
While Mauricio Pochettino will not have Maatsen as an option any longer, the Argentine still has Levi Colwill, Ben Chilwell and Marc Cucurella to call upon
