Chelsea and Liverpool will reportedly compete with Real Madrid in the race to sign 22-year-old Dutch full-back Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen.
According to a report by Spanish outlet Depor, Jeremie Frimpong has seen his stock soar further. The 22-year-old full-back was already a target for Real Madrid ahead of the 2024 summer transfer window. Chelsea and Liverpool are also keen on prising him away from Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen next year.
Jeremie Frimpong has established himself as one of the best full-backs in the Bundesliga since joining Bayer Leverkusen from Celtic in January 2021. The Dutchman was a promising right-back when he arrived at BayArena nearly three years ago. But he could not have foreseen such a drastic rise in his stock.
The 22-year-old has transformed into a highly productive full-back, contributing to goals for fun. Frimpong has started the 2023/24 season well, amassing five goals and seven assists in 16 outings thus far. Meanwhile, the youngster’s progress has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of Chelsea, Liverpool, and Real Madrid.
Real Madrid’s interest in the former Celtic full-back is long-standing. The Merengues have tracked the young defender for a long time and view him as one of the candidates to be Dani Carvajal’s long-term successor. And Frimpong’s output in the final third suggests he can take over from the veteran Spaniard at Real Madrid.
As for Chelsea, the Blues signed Malo Gusto from Lyon this past summer. Mauricio Pochettino thus has two top-class right-backs in his squad. So, Chelsea might not need another option, although Real Madrid’s unwavering interest in James should keep them interested in a potential replacement.
Meanwhile, Liverpool might not need a right-back for a long time, considering Trent Alexander-Arnold’s status in the squad. The English international will be the next Liverpool captain and is one of the first names on the team sheet. So, Liverpool’s interest in Frimpong is perplexing.
Nonetheless, Chelsea and Liverpool are keen on signing the 22-year-old Bayer Leverkusen full-back. But Real Madrid should ideally be in the pole position to sign Frimpong from the high-flying Bundesliga club
