The average Chelsea head coach under Roman Abramovic and Todd Boehly has lasted just 484 days into the job, as Mauricio Pochettino will be looking to buck that trend at Stamford Bridge. A host of players have been signed the transfer market with an eye on long-term thinking, but as Graham Potter found out, Blues bosses are rarely afforded the luxury of patience and if Pochettino lasts a similar amount of time in west London then there could be as many as three of his summer signings that never play for him. Here, Express Sport has looked at those players that may never feature under the Argentine.
Angelo
Angelo was one of the talented Brazilian starlets to join Chelsea this summer in a £13million move from Santos, as the teenager is the youngest player to score in the history of the Copa Libertadores and is tipped for a very bright future in the Premier League.
However, the 18-year-old will not get his first taste of English football until next season at the earliest, having been shipped out on loan to sister club Strasbourg in France for the season to play under former Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira.
He is yet to make a start for the Ligue 1 side but has come off the bench on three occasions as he looks to continue impressing in Europe before returning to Chelsea. But if Pochettino does not last over a year into the job – such as several of his predecessors – he won’t get the chance to play for the Blues boss.
Andrey Santos
Andrey Santos did play under Pochettino during pre-season, but before making a league appearance he was sent out on loan to Nottingham Forest for the campaign, where he will get used to English football after impressing at the Under-20 World Cup with Brazil.
He played the full 90 minutes as Forest crashed out of the Carabao Cup to Burnley and was ineligible to face his parent club when Steve Cooper’s outfit claimed a remarkable 1-0 win at Stamford Bridge on Saturday.
But if results such as the upset for Forest continue, then Pochettino may not be in charge when Santos returns to Chelsea at the end of the season and instead could be competing under a different head coach who did not want to sign him
