Chelsea have spoken to Marc Guehi about returning to Stamford Bridge this summer – after Wesley Fofana ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.
That is according to Fabrizio Romano.
What’s the story?
Well, it was Thomas Tuchel who sold the England international to Crystal Palace back in July 2022 – the south Londoners agreed a deal worth just £18m.
Now – according to the Daily Mail – Crystal Palace value Guehi at £60m as Chelsea attempt to bring their academy graduate back to west London.
The Guardian have also reported on Chelsea’s interest in the 23-year-old.
Now, Romano has shared further details when speaking to Caught Offside.
The reliable Italian journalist said: “Marc Guehi. There’s a lot of interest in the Crystal Palace defender, but it’s still too early to say where he will go.
Palace players are always linked with moves away but it’s important to underline that Palace have to be respected and they want important money or they keep their stars. Chelsea had some contacts on the player side 15 days ago, but again, no concrete negotiations or anything advanced.
It is interesting to hear that Chelsea have already made contact with Guehi’s representatives, as it suggests he is a serious target for Mauricio Pochettino this summer.
Guehi should not be a priority for Chelsea this summer
In our view, Chelsea have other areas of the squad which are more in need of strengthening this summer.
Yes, Fofana has suffered a serious injury, although Pochettino still has Levi Colwill, Thiago Silva, Trevoh Chalobah and Benoit Badiashile for two centre-back positions, so Guehi is not a necessity.
Moves for a standout midfielder – like Moises Caicedo – or a top striker, such as Paolo Dybala or Dusan Vlahovic, should take priority ahead of a deal for the Crystal Palace No.6 this summer.
Be sure to keep an eye on the Guehi situation regardless, as Chelsea seem very keen on bringing him back to Stamford Bridge.
