Levi Colwill recently acknowledged that Steven Gerrard was his football hero growing up and that he has been linked to a transfer to Liverpool this summer.
Liverpool has been after a player who grew up watching and idolizing a certain Steven Gerrard over the past year. Jürgen Klopp sought for Jude Bellingham because he was a remarkable wonderkid who had admired the Reds icon as a youngster.
Real Madrid appears to be winning the race to sign Bellingham, who was Bellingham’s idol as a young player. However, Liverpool is now interested in another player who idolized Gerrard.
Levi Colwill, a defender for Chelsea, was reportedly coveted by both Liverpool and Manchester City in April, according to The Evening Standard. Goal has since added that while this is the truth, Chelsea is unwilling to allow the player depart.
Levi Colwill is a huge fan of former Reds midfielder Steven Gerrard, but it’s unclear whether he’ll end up on Merseyside in the near future. This may be helpful in any transfer race.
When questioned about his football heroes in 2021, he responded, “Growing up, it was always Steven Gerrard, a leader,” according to a recording that just leaked on social media. “I was simply so impressed by him. I used to keep images of him in my room, and I used to try to imitate him whenever I was practicing or playing.
I used to pretend to be him, wear his clothes, and do things like that. I simply turned to face him. Although I never really played central midfield, I always attempted to adopt his approach, therefore I started there.
Colwill does play defense rather than midfield, but his background as a center-back may help explain why Klopp appears to be interested in signing him. The fact that Brighton & Hove Albion are also interested in the 20-year-old defender (whose original proposal of $37 million, £30 million, or €35 million was reportedly rejected this week) can be attributed to the myriad of beneficial advantages associated to his playing.
For starters, the Gerrard disciple is a homegrown talent, which might be crucial for the Reds given that James Milner, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, and Caoimhn Kelleher are all expected to leave the club this summer if Liverpool receives a fair offer from a suitor.
Colwill is left-footed as well, which might be one of the main draws for Klopp. With the exception of full-backs Andy Robertson and Kostas Tsimikas, the Reds manager now lacks a left-footed option at the back because Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez, Ibrahima Konaté, and Jol Matip are all right-footers.
