Celtics Are Warned by Nick Wright About a “Unjust” Playoff Path
On Thursday, the Boston Celtics suffered yet another terrible defeat at the hands of the Atlanta Hawks, despite Dejounte Murray’s explosive 44 points and game-winning shot in overtime.
With the playoffs beginning in less than a month, their supporters should be worried after a run of concerning losses, the most recent of which was this one.
Though it appears secure for Boston to get the top seed in the Eastern Conference, they would now play the Miami Heat or the Philadelphia 76ers in the opening round of the playoffs.
On FS1’s “First Things First,” Nick Wright made a controversial statement in which he criticized Boston’s first-round matchup against Miami or Philly as unfair and suggested that the top seeds in sports should be able to choose their playoff opponents.
Allowing a top seed to choose its playoffs opponents would be a radical departure from the current system in the four major professional sports organizations. It might also lead to unanticipated consequences, particularly in terms of reshuffling the remaining playoff matchups.
Although the Celtics would probably be open to such a move this season, they shouldn’t care who they play in the opening round of the playoffs if they are, as many have said, a championship club.
They have recently suffered some concerning losses, so if they want to go all the way and win their 18th NBA championship this summer, they must change their mindset.
They let up a 22-point lead in the fourth quarter to lose to the Cleveland Cavaliers earlier this month, and they squandered a 30-point lead against the same Hawks squad they fell short of on Thursday.
Boston has two weeks to prepare for the “second season,” because nothing will be simple or taken for granted once they arrive.
