In the first half of their matchup against Chelsea in the Premier League on Thursday, Antony was lost for Erik ten Hag’s team.
HOW COME THAT? Just before the half-hour mark, Trevoh Chalobah tackled Antony at Old Trafford, and he was unable to get up. The winger was then carried out on a stretcher, appearing to be in tears as he did so, and Marcus Rashford took his place. Casemiro gave Erik ten Hag’s team the lead after just six minutes when he headed the ball in, and Anthony Martial extended their advantage shortly before halftime.
THE BIGGER PICTURE: Manchester United is dealt a bad injury timing. On June 3, they play Manchester City in the FA Cup Final, a game Antony’s participation in now appears uncertain. Rashford ought to be available, but the English winger has missed previous games due to an illness and injury.
THEN WHAT? On Sunday, Manchester United’s Premier League season comes to a close when they host Fulham. But it’s unlikely that Antony’s long-term availability will be known right away.
